Happy 15 months Preslee and Mason

happy 15 months my beautiful little girls! preslee and mason really are turning into little girls now. everday, i notice more and more that they are shedding that baby-likeness (is that a word?) and becoming little girls. when we talk to them, they answer, in their own language, of course, but you can see the beginnings of real conversation. it's amazing! preslee says about 20 words and mason about 14 words. they are signing and never miss the chance to tell me that they want more food at breakfast. the walking has turned into running and lots and lots of squealing and laughter. when you say, "where is preslee or mason?", they point to themselves and they definitely know who mama and dada are.

here were their growth stats at the doctor today.
preslee weighs 19 pounds 10.6 ozs and is 28 3/4 inches long (10% for weight and 3% for height)
mason weighs 17 pounds 8.6 ozs and is 28 3/4 inches long (3% for height and weight)
their pediatrician says that they are still really tiny, but not to worry. they are gaining weight at a steady rate. both girls are really good eaters and love their milk. they had 4 shots today and were such little troopers. papaw cried more than they did.

happy birthday my beautiful little girls! don't grow up too fast!

So many Toys

we can't wait to have a playroom for all these toys!!

Mama, Mama!!!

the new favorite word in our house is mama. preslee and mason know who mama is, but choose to use that word to pretty much describe everything. today preslee was on a roll. first thing this morning i heard maaamaaaaa...... on the monitor at 7am and then she started to have a little meltdown while yelling for me again right after breakfast.

Uh oh

Stealing Cinderella

i just found the sweetest song that i think i have ever heard. drew says no guy will ever steal his cinderellas. preslee and mason, you don't know it yet, but you have your daddy completely wrapped around your little fingers. prince charmings, be afraid, be very afraid!

Fun at Nana and PopPop's

this weekend the girls got a chance to play with their cousin Alex at Nana and PopPop's. it's so fun watching them all three interact with each other. what a great time they had!

Our 4th Anniversary

i've heard couples say that there are times in a relationship that make you realize you picked the wrong partner. i've never had one of those moments with Drew. instead i've had millions of moments where i realized we are going to make it for the long haul.

*when, on our first date, he let me try his soft crabs just because i had never tasted them before, i knew would would make it. (those of you who know drew, know he never shares his food with anyone)

*when he would drive every other weekend from chapel hill to baltimore, even if i was working nights that weekend, just to see me, i knew we would make it.

*when we made it through his second semester of grad school, graduation, a new job and moving into our first house, i knew we would make it.

*when, together, we tackled the gigantic job of removing wallpaper on every wall in every room in our house, i knew we would make it.

*when i saw his beaming face as i walked down the aisle on our wedding day, i knew we would make it.

*when he sat by my side, cried tears with me and prayed that we would some day be parents, i knew we would make it.

*when he chugged a nasty Ensure shake because i had to drink them to gain weight when i was pregnant, i knew we would make it.

*when he waited on me hand and foot with a positive attitude during weeks of bed rest, i knew we would make it.

*when i saw the look on his face, when dr. weitz said, "you are going to have two baby girls", i knew we would make it.

*when he laid in my hospital bed and held me while i cried over our tiny baby girls in the NICU, i knew we would make it.

*when we made it through the first year of twins still going strong, i knew we would make it.

*when i watch preslee and mason's eyes light up when they see their daddy, i know we will make it.

*when we rode in the car for our first family road trip, no matter what went wrong or what went right, i knew it would be great because drew was by my side.

*when i watch him read a nightly bedtime story to the girls and do all the different voices, i know, we will make it.

happy anniversary to the man who makes my life better every day in every way. i thank God for you. four years and you still won't eat leftovers or anything that has been microwaved, but i love you with all my heart, anyway.

Double the Blessings

while the girls and i were at the grocery store shopping today, i saw a couple watching us. the woman finally came up and said, " we have been watching you as you shopped around the store with both of those babies. how do you do it?" but then the kicker, she asked me, "do you really like being the mom of twins, i can't imagine, i feel sorry for you." of course, those of you who know me, know that i didn't take that comment lying down, i quickly corrected her in the error of her ways and ensured her that i loved being the mommy of twins, not to EVER feel sorry for me and how i felt blessed that God chose me.

without even blinking an eye, i can think of so many reasons that i love being a twin mommy.

1.armfuls and handfuls
every child fills their parents' hearts and home with joy. that's what i really love about having twins. the love and joy are compounded. cradling two twinfants in your arms was so incredibly, almost unbearably, sweet. holding hands with two toddlers -- one on the right, and one on the left -- while walking down the sidewalk makes me feel complete. double hugs, double kisses, mommy-in-the-middle "sandwich" cuddles on the couch... life just doesn't get any better than that.

2.single-mindedness
parenting happens in stages. for me, it's much easier to manage two infants or two toddlers, than to juggle the needs of a baby and a preschooler. the phases of parenthood are experienced more intensely, sometimes, because they are simultaneous, but i love it that way.

3. shared accomplishments
it's always exciting to see your child meet a milestone. but when twins accomplish their goals simultaneously, it's a wonderful experience for a family. for example, i was bursting with pride when both preslee and mason starting walking, but the achievement was even sweeter because they were happy for each other. i love how they clap for each other!

4.private jokes
it's such fun to hear them babble to each other and play together. once when they were about 10 months old, we were driving down the road, when giggles erupted from the car seats in the back seat. as mason laughed, preslee broke out in giggles; they spurred each other on the entire ride home. what a sweet sound those baby giggles were; it is still sweet to hear them laugh together.

5.alike, but different
it's fascinating to be an observer of twins. with so many similarities, but such stark differences, it's always interesting to see how they develop as individuals. where parents of singletons may say, "oh, you are just like your sister was at that age," parents of multiples have an instant basis of comparison and contrast among their children.

6. 2-for-1 bonus
short and sweet .... one pregnancy = two babies! such a deal! although a pregnancy with multiples may have more risks, and sometimes more complications, it truly is a two-for-one deal.

7. a sense of status
okay, i admit it. i get a little thrill of pride in being a mom of twins. it's like being a part of an elite club. you feel an instant bond with other parents of multiples. i love the reaction i get when i tell people i have twins. "wow!" "i always wanted twins..." "i don't know how you do it..." it's almost like we enjoy an exclusive status in the parenting world, earning a slight nod of respect for pulling double duty.

8.sharing
twins share everything -- their birthday, their parents' attention, and most of their belongings. although they may get frustrated with their situation, as a parent, it's very gratifying to witness their "what's mine is yours" attitude in a moment of unselfish benevolence. preslee and mason give to each other so freely.

9. a beautiful bond
the twin bond is more enduring than any other relationship on earth, starting even before birth, and often outlasting many friendships and even marriages. despite their squabbles, it's comforting to know that they will (hopefully) enjoy their unique relationship for all of their lives. when i was pregnant, i remember dr. weitz telling us in our final ultrasound before they were born, that preslee and mason were as tight as they could be, they were cheek to cheek. as their mommy, i feel really privileged to be a party to their special bond, and to have the opportunity to nurture it.

10.confidence in companionship
i love the confidence that our girls exhibit simply because they have always had each other to rely on. i love to watch them enter new, unfamiliar situations with total confidence because they are together. i love seeing all the ways that being a twin shapes their personalities, both as an advantage and a disadvantage. they have never and will never know loneliness because they've always had and will have each other as a companion.

so, lady in the grocery store, don't feel sorry for me or any other twin mommy. we are busy, but doubly blessed and so, so happy!

Tears

preslee has become quite the expressive little girl. today she had a complete meltdown because i took the remote away from her. she sobbed, hit her little fists on the carpet and then fell over, just crying and crying. it broke my heart, and apparently mason's too. i watched in awe, as mason walked over to preslee, took her little pointer finger and touched preslee's tear that was running down her cheek. then she smiled at her! immediately preslee stopped crying. i had to write this down on my list of things i love about being their mommy.

just as we thought spring was here to stay, mother nature reminded us that winter is still lingering. it was much colder today! yesterday we had the girls in sandals and shorts, today we had on sweatshirts. drew and i enjoyed a huge cup of coffee while the girls played on the tot lot.

Swinging

preslee and mason LOVE the double swing at my gym, so their mamaw and papaw got them one for their birthday. up until today, it has been too cold to go outside and enjoy it. when we woke up this morning and saw that sun, daddy hung it and the girls played in it all afternoon. thanks mamaw and papaw!

Good Sleeping!

this must be some really good sleeping. i can't imagine! (i should add that this is preslee, uncle mark and aunt peggy, you were right)
